JUSTICES OF THE PEACE, ENGLAND AND WALES

The Commission Areas (Gwent, Mid Glamorgan and South Glamorgan) Order 1996

Made 7th March 1996
Laid before Parliament 8th March 1996
Coming into force 1st April 1996

    The Lord Chancellor, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 55(1) and (3) of the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994[1], hereby makes the following Order:
        1.—(1)  This Order may be cited as the Commission Areas (Gwent, Mid Glamorgan and South Glamorgan) Order 1996 and, subject to paragraph (2), shall come into force on 1st April 1996.

        (2)  This Order shall come into force immediately after the coming into force of the Magistrates' Courts (Wales) (Consequences of Local Government Changes) Order 1996.[2]
        2.    In this Order any reference to a preserved county or county borough shall be construed in accordance with the Local Government Act 1972[3] as amended by the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994.[4]
        3.    The commission areas of Gwent, Mid Glamorgan and South Glamorgan shall be abolished.
        4.    There shall be constituted two new commission areas which shall be known as the Gwent commission area (or in Welsh as ardal comisiwn Gwent) and the South Wales commission area (or in Welsh as ardal comisiwn De Cymru).
        5.—(1)  The Gwent commission area shall consist of
       (a) the preserved county of Gwent, together with
       (b) so much of the county borough of Caerphilly as falls within the preserved county of Mid Glamorgan.

        (2)  The South Wales commission area shall consist of the preserved counties of Mid Glamorgan and South Glamorgan, excluding so much of the county borough of Caerphilly as falls within the preserved county of Mid Glamorgan.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)
    This Order is made in connection with the abolition of the existing counties of Gwent, Mid Glamorgan and South Glamorgan by the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994. It provides for the replacement of the Gwent, Mid Glamorgan and South Glamorgan commission areas by two commission areas to be known as Gwent and South Wales, and comes into force on 1st April 1996.
